MAORI FUNERAL.

Tributes to Late Mr. T. Heberley. Final tributes to the late Mr T. Heberley were paid by many who attended his funeral on Saturday afternoon. Representatives of both races I were present at the Maori meeting i house on the Hutt Road, Lower Hutt, j Speeches were made by Mr W. W. i Bird, Inspector of Native Schools; | Mr H. S. King, Native Trust Office; ! Mr W. J. Phillips, museum staff; Mr I. Puketapu, representative of allied Maori tribes; and the Rev. P. Teinuera, of Otaki, the late Mr Heberley being a valued member of the church in his district. Mr Puketapu recited a farewell chant of very ancient origin. A close relative, Mr Hapi Love, expressed the deep appreciation of the family and tribe at the i resence of so many distinguished visitors, their deep regret at so great a loss to the nation, and their compliments to the truly great work of Mr Heberley. Part of the l funeral service, in Maori and English, was read by the Rev. P. Tcmuera, who delivered an eloquent address extolling his departed friend and expressing the hope that some means would be found of continuing his important work. A favourite hymn in Maori was I sung in two-part harmony. Many mourners followed tjie pro- ! cession to the cemetery in Te Puni I Street, where at the graveside the i Benediction was pronounced in > .Maori. Some of the Maori wahine.s ! sang an appropriate final lament. Visitors were later entertained at the hall by the relatives and mem- | bers of the tribe.
