BANKING BUSINESS INCREASED
ENGLISH RETURNS. RECORDS REACHED. Largest Deposits Since 1932 Now Recorded. Press Association—Copyright. Received noon. London, Jan. 18. The expansion of British banking activities is indicated by the returns ot eleven clearing banks last year, in which deposits reached the record of £2,315,000,000, an increase of .£164,500,000 —the largest since 1932, when, following the National Government balancing its Budget, capital was returned from abroad producing £246,000,000 increase in deposits. The recent trade recovery and rise I of commodities has enabled the banks to increase their advances in 1936 by £79,000,000 to £857,838,000. Their total investments are now £630,422,000 an increase of £25,250,000 compared with 1935.
