ELTHAM COURT.

Heavy Fine Inflicted On Erring Driver/ Press Association —Copyright. Eltham, January 18. For being intoxicated in charge of a car, John Henry Withers, 35, motor mechanic, a married man with five children and a resident of New Plymouth, was fined £lO and costs. His license was suspended and he was debarred from securing a further one for a period of two years by Justices of the Peace, Messrs Ira Bridger and Chas. S. Rush, at the Police Court this morning. The prosecution pointed out that this was the third offence of its kind in one month and asked for a substantial penalty. The accused had been convicted of a similar offence in 1933. The Bench said that although it took a serious view of the case, on account of accused’s financial position and the state of the health of his wife, it would not inflict a term of imprisonment. Accused agreed to take out a prohibition order and was: allowed two months in which to pay the fine.
