HOUSE PAINTING.
CHANGING FASHIONS Red Roofs Becoming Rarer. With so much building going o n in the town it lhas become obvious (that a great many people are not confining themselves to old ideas in house painting. The chief departure is the preference for brighter colours, both for the and interior [work. The first change apparent is the gradual disappearance of the red roofs. Green is becoming increasingly popular and it is anticipated that a brighter colour, orange or tangerine will be the fashion. In the early days of settlement in New Zealand the English traditions of house-painting were faithfully observed. Roofs were painted red and walls whitewashed, and this continued for many years because it was customary and the materials were cheap. Eventually white paint replaced the whitewash. It is maintained that where soot or smoke Is encounaered red is a much more serviceable colour for roofs and it has been noticed in Stratford that on. buildings adjacent to the railway, red has withstood the effects of smoke and soot better than other colours. In the town there are also a few black roots but there has been little preference shown for this colour. While the depression existed little painting was done but, with the advent of better days there was a brighter outlook which was reflected in a brighter taste in colour. Green and blue houses with contrasting facings and spouting are to be seen In larger towns and it is only a matter of time before, the idea spreads. That is the opinion of large firms interested in the sale of paint. Kitchenettes in blue, red and other colours are favoured and Stratford hardware dealers are. sometimes set a problem when inquiries are made for coloured . saucepans to tone with the chosen colour scheme.
