LAZY ENGLISH
Insufficient attention to correct speech is given in Australian schools, said Professor E. R. Holme, Professor of English Literature at the Sydney University, the other day. He supported the statement of the moderator of the Sydney Presbytery (the Rev. McVittie) that Australians of all classes “murder the King’s English. ’ ’
“I consider the standard of English spoken in Australia lower than it should be,” said Professor Holme. 1 ‘There i'’ not enough effort made to get us out of the habit of speaking in a slovenly fashion or to prevent us from getting into it. “It is a natural degeneration, however, and one common to the other parts of the English-speakin< world.
“If our speech is worse than theirs, it is because we do not do enough to correct it.”
