GOLFING “PLUM.”

Americas Invited For Post At Sunningdale

Sunningdale, one of the leading golf clubs, is shortly to appoint a new professional, and surprise was created when it was announced that players in America had been invited to apply for the post. It is one worth at least £lOOO a year, and it is felt that it should go to an English player. If the Sunningdale officials have had any thought of engaging an American, as their advertisement sag gested, they may find obstacles in the way. It it thought the Home Office would not allow one to be imported to take up a permanent position. The Football League clubs have been refused permission to bring players from the Continent while there are plenty of English players available. The late Herbert Chapman tried to engage Hiden, the sthr goalkeeper of Austria, for the Arsenal, but he was refused permission, and it is thought the authorities will not be prepared to treat the golfer differently from the footballer But the Sunningdale officials have explained that their advertisement in America was not an invitation to American players to apply. They point oqt that there are many Englishmen who have gone to America and attained first-class rank, and they were simply providing the opportunity for one of them to return. One may be sure, however, that the club will be overwhelmed with applications from players at home. Sunningdale, who have a distin guished membership, require a first class player, whose duties will differ considerably from those of most professionals whose time is chiefly occu pied in coaching and superintending . the shop. He will be wanted to play, and only a man in the top flight will be good enough to take part in thatches with scratch and plus opponents.
