Visitor’s First Impression Of
New Zealand.
When she had her first glimpse of the North Island from the Rangitane as the vessel was nearing the coast on Wednesday, Dr Fanny Stamm said that she was tempfied to ask herself why she had travelled so many miles across the ocean, says the Evening Post. The reason for this was that she thought the North Island resembled very much her own country, Switzerland. But now —'well, she is looking forward with great interest to her tour of one month in this country. Dr Stamm comes from Basle University, where -she took the degree of Doctor of Philology. She is a member of the Swiss Association of University Women and gives lectures, but is not on the staff of tfLie university, which, she states, does not employ women teachers. Dr Stamm added that the University of Basle was founded in 1462 and was one of the oldest universities on the Continent. It was not what could be described as a large university, but it had a very go oil school of medicine. German is Dr Stamm’s language, but she has studied French, English and Italian. She is also a keen student of history. Thermal Districts. Dr Stamm will be visiting only the North Island and is keen to see the volcanoes and thermal districts. She said sh e would also have liked to go to the South Island, but to do that she would have had to rush her tour. From New Zealand Dr Stamm is going to Australia, and then on to Java and Ceylon, before returning to Basle. On her return to Basle she said that she would be giving lectures on New Zealand. Now that Switzerland was off the gold standard, said Dr Stamm, the tourist traffic was growing again, but as the German people, their neighbours, were not supposed to take more than 10 marks out of their country’, there was no hope of the tourist traffic from Germany improving. Dr Stamm has with her letters of introduction to the New Zealand and Australian Federations of University i Women.
