CENTENARY MEMORIAL
I Model Mapri Fighting Pa Proposed. Press Association—Copyright. Wellington, To-day. A special committee which has at its head the Bishop of Aotearoa, the Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett, is already moving in conenction with the proposal to erect a model Maori fighting pa to mark the centenary of New Zealand in 1940. It is believed that between £BOOO and £lO,OOO will be required for the project, which will result in the construction of a pa faithful in every respect to those of the days of tribal warfare. Bishop Bennett explained in an interview that the question of a suitable site for the past was receiving the fullest consideration already. Two sites favoured were Te Mata Peak, at Havelock North, and Ota.tara, near Napier, but another proposal which had been advanced had been that the pa should be placed on Quarantine Island, at the northern end of the Ahuriri Lagoon, Napier.
