Lord Clarendon’s speech at the opening of Parliament gratefully recalled ex-King Edward’s association with South Africa and expressed re gret at his abdication but at the same time extended hearty loyalty to the new Monarch.
Lord Clarendon referred to legislation introducing the new form of oath which the King will take at the Coronation in respect of South Africa. He also said that important legislation was foreshadowed to control alien
immigration. All Nationalist members walked out of the Assembly when the Prime Minister, General Hertzog, moved for a Loyal Address to the King congratulating him on his accession.
