SETTLEMENT POSSIBLE
Renewal Of 1934 Awards Made To Strikers. Press Association—Copyright. San Francisco, Jan. 5. Mr. Harry Bridges and other longshoremen's officials met the Shipowners’ Committee which offered a renewal of he 1934 awards. The longshoremen refused to accept the offer unless with an Atlantic Coast wage scale. This the owners refused but they asked the longshoremen to reconsider their offer. The Associated Press learns from an authoritative source that the masters, mates, pilots and engineers are preparing to abandon their demand for preferential hiring which wil* remove the greatest obstacle to the settlement of strike. Their represenatives conferred with Federal conciliators in an effort to find a substitute clause to save the union’s face. This is regarded as the greatest step towards a settlement yet made.
