NO CONSCRIPTION IN PEACE-TIME IN BRITAIN
SIR THOMAS INSKIP MAKES A PROPHECY. FANTASTIC NOTIONS ABROAD CONCERNING OUR RECRUITING PROBLEMS. FOREIGNERS DO NOT .UNDERSTAND OUR CHARACTER. (Press Association—Copyright.) Received I p.m. LONDON, January 6. The Minister for the Co-ordination of Defence, Sir Thomas Inskip, in a speech at Glasgow, prophesied that (Britain would never introduce conscription in peace-time. He ridiculed the fantastic notions entertained in some quarters abroad regarding her alleged failure to solve her recruiting problem. “I think,” he said, “our foreign friends do not always understand our national characteristics. We hold very tenaciously to our traditions. We have our own ideas about the way we shall govern ourselves and defend ourselves. “I think that we shall be able to show other nations that we —perhaps alone among the nations of Europe—can make the voluntary system work and that it will suffice our needs."
