HERE AND THERE IN THE RACING WORLD

Sire Of Stayers. Trantham's team of five at the Auckland meeting performed with great credit. Ths heroine was again Mr R. J. Murphy’s line mare Cuddle, who repealed her three successes of i last year by winning the Auckland Cup, King’s Plate and Clifford Plate. Essex won the Queen's Plate an J the Derby, while Shy was a. winner, Brunhilde secured a third and a second, and the other runner, Sunee was unsuccessful. Altogether they won £3lOO-Cuddle £1750, Essex £101)0. Shy £250, and Pninlvblc £lOO. In addition, Cuddle's Cup trophy is valued at £5O. Wotan Not for Wellinp-ton. Expectations that Wotan, sensational iw inner of the last Melbourne Cup, would be seen in action at the Wellington meeting this mouth, will not be realised. It is not the intention of the Messrs. Smith Bros, to nominate him for any racing in Now Zealand at present, and J. Fryer will prepare him for another trip to Australia in the autumn. No doubt the New Zealand minimum of 7.7 influenced this decision. The last time he was haudica<pped in Australia, following his win in the Cup. was 8.8 on the 6.7 minimum. Sire of Stayers. Siegfried, sire of Wotan, received another good advertisement when Essex won the Great Northern Derby. Essex, up to the Wellington spring meeting last October, was trained in his own district, 'but was then left with J. W. Lowe at Trantham. He made steady improvement in all his work and, after winning at Levin, he was unluckily defeated at Otaki prior to going to Ellerslie, where he won the Queen's Plate as a preliminary to his- Derby victory. Essex was bred by his owner, Mr J. S. McLeod, president of the New Zealand Racing Conference, and is out of Gay Virginia, by Lord Quex from Queen Lizzie, by Royal Artillery—Oralene, by Lochiel. Tisga, Gesl.o and Ganipat are ail out of Queen Lizzie. The state of the going on New Year’s Day may have affected the chances of some of the field, but Essex is a sound stayer, who should have good prospects in the St. Legers.
