Midhirst Birthday Party.
In honour of the twenty-first birthday of Francis, youngest daughter of the late Mrs. Miller and Mr. V. P. Miller, of Midhirst, a jolly party was given last night at her home, York Road. Many beautiful birthday presents were brought by the guests, and the evening was spent in dancing and playing cards and games. Among those present were: Mesdames W. Watts, R. H. Wellington, C. Kovaleski, Potroz, Barribal, and the Misses A. and R. Miller, Wellington and Potroz (2).
Th'e treasures of the Guelph family, ancestors of the British Royal family, are on view- in the Castle Museum in Berlin. It is believed that the first, horsedrawn black prison van used in the streets of London was named after a muscular negress of Boston named Maria Lee. It was said that "Black Maria” was so powerful it was always necessary to obtain a conveyance in which to take her to prison The first prison vans were, therefore, used for her. The name "Black Maria” is one of the few respectable terms in the language which the Oxford Dictionary omits to recognise.
