FIRST DAY’S PLAY

TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS NO SURPRISES YET. Good Standard Of Play Shown. Press Association —Copyright. Timaru, Last Night. The day’s play in 'the New Zealand Tennis championships brought no fhirprisefe, all the .seeded players going through to the subsequeh't rounds. After his good' display at Christchurch in the Canterbury championships, when he eliminated two seasoned opponents in N. G. Sturt and Brown, it was thought that the young Aucklander, J. T. Mayson, might provide an upset, but he failed to reproduce Iris Christchurch form and was eliminated by' J. C. Charters (Wellington). The standard of play’ was in keeping with the first day of the national championships, but sterling contests were staged, and ais the tournament progressete the play should increase in public interest. C. Angas (Canterbury), who is the favourite for the men’s singles, had a.n easy win. Sturt (Auckland) also showed much improved form on Christchurch and should be in the running. Coombe (Wellington) was not extended but does not appear of good enough class to reach the final. Barnett was the. co-fina.list with Angas at Christchurch and will probably fill a similar role here.
