Rome, Dec. 30, While semi-officially admitting that the Pope is no worse, even Vicican circles feel the end cannot be far off. 1 In addition to other ailments it is feared he has developed thrombosis (blood clots) in the left leg. The Pope has passed several almost sleepless nights, nevertheless he insists on carrying out his duties as far as is humanly possible. He received four cardinals at his bedside yesterday and discussed Vatican affairs with the papal secretary lof state. Special prayers have been ordered. The Pope had a disturbed night last night due to pain. Dr. Milan! at 8 a.m. described the Pope’s condition at stationary. Dr. Milan! wished to summon another specialist but the Pope would not consent. Mass was said in the bedroom at 8.30. Other reports state that the condition of the Pope’s heart precludes the administration of sedatives.
The Pope has made an appreciable improvement.. The clot of blood in the leg fias dispersed pnd Jthe pain diminished. The Vatican Press Service says /that (the ganger of complications has greatly decreased. The Pope is averse to daily bulletins, 1 because he is Convinced jhe will recover. He dictated ja letter to the Nuns of the St. Therese Convent at Lisieux, asking \th|emi to (pray ifhat God may ( grant him strength to conduct '.the remainder ipf his life in a manner befitting his position as Pope.
