SECOND DAY’S PLAY.

There is every indication that the second day’s play’ in the National Tennis Championship will be seriously curtailed as a result of rain. Play commenced this morning in dull and threatening weather, and at the end of the first hour light drizzling rain set in .causing a stoppage of play. The weather cleared temporarily and a start was again made, but rain again set in, causing a second stoppage. At this stage four men’s singles matches had been completed and three others were at an intei esting stage.
H. A. Barnett (Canterbury) took the first set off R. Pattinson 8-6, but the latter captured the second set at 6-2. The games were three all in the second set, when play was called off till one o’clock. Bedford of Wellington was having a hard struggle against N. Edwards of Wellington. The former took the first set at 9-7, and was leading 4-2 in the second set when play ceased. E. Roussell, Wellington, who drew a bye in the first round, took two sets off K. W. Dyer, Wellington, 6-4, 8-6, and is leading 4-3 in the third set, when rain .drove the players off the court. There was no further play till one o’clock. Results: Men's Singles. Second round: A. D. Latham beat G. L. Lindsay 6 —3, 6 —l, 6—o; A. D. Brown beat T. Rhodes-W'illiams 6 —4, 6—2, 6—l; N. G. Sturt beat B. Boyd 6 —2, 6—2, 6—l; A. R. Gant beat D. A. McCaskey 6—l, 6 —3, 6 —2.
