A reflection / of the improved economic conditions of the people generally is the (number of marriages celebrated at Stratford during 1936 the figures constituting a record for the district.

The actual number of licenses issued was 100, the century being reached to-day. A search of the records for the past 30 years reveals that the highest figure previously' attained was in 1930 when 93 licenses were isisued. in 1906 the number was 54. Licenses for 1909 totalled 75 but there was a considerable deerease in the following year, only 45 being applied for. During the war years there was a marked fluctuation the number of licenses falling as low as 34 in 1917. In 1921 a return to normal conditions was indicated by the issue of 76 licenses. No great dimunition is evident during the slump period.

For 1933, 1934 and 1935 the respective figures were, 81, 86, 78. A fair proportion of the marriage ceremonies during the current year were performed by the Registrar (Mr. T. M. Brooks) the total reaching 17. ..
