FOUR HOURS’ SLEEP.
Uncommon Energy Of 8.8. C. Official. (By Air Mail.) London, December 12. Eric Maschwitz, 35-year-old 8.8. C. director of variety, has not slept more than four hours a night or eaten more than one meal a day for 10 years. Tall, dark, very' thin, full of energy' and enthusiasm, a successful songwriter, distinguished novelist and author of a new musical show, he gives this rule as his recipe for success. “I have proved that the best way for a man to work hard and be successful is to live on one meal a day. And I don't believe that anyone needs more than four hours’ sleep at night. “I started life as a waiter in Nice at a salary of 100 francs —about £1 a week. I always wanted to be a dramatist and now 1 am achieving my ambition. “In my varied career I have been actor, assistant film director, head of a correspondence school for writers, a journalist ,a novelist, a song writer and a 8.8. C. director.’’
“0.K.1” said the weed merchant; “there’s lots of brands of tobacco, as you say, but, in a manner of speaking, you can divide them broadly into two classes —the toasted and the untoasted. Yes, and I’ll tell you something more: once you take tne toasted —the real thing, mind —you w’on’t care a row of pins about the untoasted, no matter what the brand is.” The customer looked thoughtful. “Can toasting really make all that difference?” he ventured. “It can —and it does!” declared the tobacconist emphatically, “the toasting of tobacco is one of the most ingenious and efficient processes as yet invented. What does it do? Why, it cuts out the nicotine and at the same time gives this tobacco that fine, pure, clean, sweet fragrance smokers love. You can smoke any amount of it with safety—and, my word! —you enjoy every whiff!” “I must certainly have a tin,” laughed the customer, “a small one just to try it out.” “You’ll want a big one next time,” prophesied the tobacconist, “you wait and see.”
