TOWN AND COUNTRY.
BY THE WAYSIDE. Travelling motorists resting on vacant sections in, Broadway south while lunch was enjoyed in picnic fashion, attracted the attention of local residents during the holidays. Such locations are more often chosen as a stopping place by the man with his “swag,” as there' are much more attractive grassy spots close to the town. EUCHRE AND DANCE. There was a good attendance at the Foresters’ weekly euchre and dance. Winners of the euchre were; Women, Mrs Aagaard 1, Mrs Tunbridge 2, Miss Jones consolation, Mrs Aagaard special prize,; men, Mr Tubby 1, Mr Shepherd 2, Mr Rowe consolation, Mr Anscombe special. Monte Carlo winners were Mr Huckstep and Miss Horn. Wright’s dance band provided the music.
TIMES HAVE CHANGED. Until recent years the. celebration of the Christmas festival in every town in the Dominion would not have seemed adequate or appropriate without a great display of pungas, ferns, and greenery’ of every description that could be secured from the native bush. Broadway was no exception to the rule, and councils, local bodies’ and shopkeepers vied with each other in leaking their displays. But a. new generation has arisen, and with it has grown the cult of the preservation of the wonderful beauty of our native flora. The flashlight of public opinion has been cast on the inherent desire in humans to destroy nature's handwork, and happily is effecting a cure. VISITORS TO MOUNTAIN. Wit wqathar has restricted the activities of visitors to the Stratford mountain house during the holidays, reported the caretaker, Mr J. Uarryer to-day when a telephone inquiry was made by the Press. In spite of the conditions, however, the number of visitors had been satisfactory. Several are staying at the quarters provided. One party went to the summit yesterday, but otherwise 'there has been very little climbing.
