WORK AND WALK What is Your Daily Mileage I HOUSEWIVES DO 13 (Own Correspondent.—By Air Mail.) LONDON, Oct. 14. How many miles do you walk every day during your work? Medical science is interested. The answer may give a clue to the cause of many occupational complaints. Research has revealed that the reason many women develop large ankles a few years after marriage is the ceaseless walking of the housewife in a badly-planned home. Her daily average is approximately 23,000 steps or about thirteen miles. This totals nearly 5,000 miles a year. On an average shopping day a woman covers about eight ana one-third miles. At Christmas time the figure rises to eleven miles. Waiters, who top the list of longdistance walkers, average thirty-two miles a day—and suffer from flat feet. Postmen arc second with twenty-two nines. Tests with a pedometer in King’s College Hospital, Denmark Hill, S.E., show that the matron covers seven miles a day, the sister of the out-patients department twenty-five miles, and the average nurse twelve and a-half miles. Other mslances covered in an average day by persons in various “walks'’ of life are: — Miles Policeman - 20 Omnibus conductor 5 Salesgirl 2 Factory girl 3 Mannequin 14 Schoolgirl Hi Schoolboy 15 Chorus girl 4$ The average distance walked in a day by any person is 18,008 steps, or nearly •ght miles.
