CHRISTMAS SHOPPING
BROADWAY CROWDED. i. Record Friday Night for Stratford. Lined on each side with an almost unbroken row of cars, bedecked overhead with an awning of coloured lights, and with the pavements and shops thronged with people Broadway, last night, presented an appearance that could almost have been taken for Christmas Eve. Shopkeepers interviewed by the "Press” to-day' were unanimous that the day and, particularly the evening, business was the . best that had been experienced since the Friday late night was introduced, two months ago. Yesterday is taken by busifnesis nfen as 1 the beginning of the Christinas shopping period for the year.
It is expected, however, that next week will see a much greater rush of buying. Although distribution of £62,000 was made to dairy factory' suppliers in the district on Thursday, the opinion ■was held yesterday that the full benefit of this has not yet been felt by Stratford shops and will be a big factor in the buying next week.
The fact that hay and, making are in full swing was probably - a factor in keeping many farmers at home yesterday as the weather, although fine, held a threat 'of imminent rain.
Shop-keepers, however, are well satisfied with the prospects for next week and are organising with a view to providing service to a maximum number of customers.
