Mr. organise! of the maritime strike; 15,000 men at, a mass meeting that .the west coast strike had won the day, but he expected the leaders would refuse to end it unless the demands of the Atlantic strikers- were also granted. The meeting a request to President Roosevelt to withdraw the subsidies from lines refusing to meet the demands. Earlier Mr. Bridges defied Mr. Ryan, treasurer of the American Federation of Labour, to remove him from the position of organiser of the longshoremen to which he was elected by union members. “Mr. Ryan has stopped my salary but he cannot buy me to become his rubber stamp,” he added.
