STRATFORD COUNTY

AMALGAMATION QUESTION. Business At Final Meeting Of Year. A special committee to represent the Stratford County Council at any conference that might take place during the next month on the subject of local body amalgamation was appointed by the council at the final monthly meeting of the year to-day. The Department of Internal Affairs forwarded a copy of the Local Government (Amalgamation Schemes) Bill, introduced by the Minister of Internal Affairs last session, for circulation purposes. The purpose of the Bill was to prpvide a simple means of bringing about a substantial reduction in the number of local authorities with a view to creating bigger and more satisfactory local government units. Local authorities, or groups of local authorities, were given power to work out amalgamation schemes best suited to the requirements of their localities, but provisions were contained which prevented purely obstructive objections from preventing desirable amalgamations. The cutting in front of the Bird Road School had been cut back, rendering the road safer for children, reported the engineer, Mr. J. W. Spence. Repairs had been made to the bridge over the Ngaire stream on the Skinner Road.

The formation on the area to be used in washing shingle had been completed at Toko. The screen had been placed in position and the pump and water-pipes would be set- in next week. Some minor repairs had been made to the trans-bridge. on the Matau Road. More extensive work on this bridge would be required. Those present were Crs. T. R. Anderson (chairman), S. Pitt, J. A. Stanford, G. Were, G. Jensen, B. Hutchen, C. J. Skitrop, J. C. Best, H. C. Taylor, W. Vickers, and Messrs. J. W. Spence (engineer) and C. J. Campnell (clerk). •
