At i afternoon tea reference to Mr Han- | cock’s enthusiasm for school work, j sports organisation, school afforestation, gardening and ground planning was made by Mesdaines P. Thomson and J. Petrie jnr., on behalf of the school committee, Mr L. J. Furrie (headmaster) and Mr E. J. Thomas and Miss Gernhoel'er (staff). Mr Furrie- presented Mr Flancock -with a cutglass jug. Further details concerning the death of Mr E. H. Alger at Blenheim on Monday night reveal that Mr Al- i ger had completed swimming more ; than 50 yards under water when it was j discovered that something was amiss j with him. A bystander jumped in I fully clothed ,but by the time the • body was recovered from the water ■ life was extinct. Artificial respir-! ation was unavailing. It is believed that Mr Alger’s death was due- to i heart, failure. Mr Alger was educat- ■ cd ;:t the Stratford primary’ and hign ; schools. While at the piimary schoolhe won a Bayly sclNdarship.
