AMUSEMENTS.

Plaza Theatre. * “Mr Deeds Goes to Town,” a I Columbia picture which shows at the i Plaza to-night for a three-day I session, is a delightful comedy which ! ranks among the most entertaining i films shown in recent months. Clar--1 ence B. Kellard’s whimsical story' has been excellently adapted for the screen and capital acting performances are given by Gary Cooper, ■ Jean Arthur, Raymond Walburn and I a large supporting cast. Gary i Cooper, whose claim to recognition j has hitherto rested on his competent ■ handling of “strong, silent” roles, reI veals unsuspected talents for light comedy by his portray'al of Longfellow Deeds, an impecunious young man, who writes poetry for a living and plays the tuba in the town band. Then, an uncle dies, leaving his 20,000,000-dollar estate to Mr Deeds. The poet, slightly daze/d, but unimpressed by his sudden riches, is .transported to New York. There he finds himself the centre of world interest. He is beset on one side by schemers who want to rid him of his wealth and on the other by tabloid newspapers, which jeeringly name him the “Cinderella Alan.” When ho finally decides to give away his millions in land grants to the unemployed everyone thinks he is insane and legal action is takep to put a ■stop to it.

King’s Theatre. Rafael Sabatini used the thrilling days of the French Revolution as a background for his great love story, “The Nuptials of Corbal,” which Capitol Films have now translated to the living screen under the title of “The Marriage of Corbal.” Directed by Carl Grime this Sabatini story will be screened at the Stratford King’s Theatre to-night and to-mor-row. The big east is headed by Nils Aster in the role of Deputy-Citizen Varennes, an unscrupulous young man who becomes fascinated with one of the condemned prisoners and rescues .the young aristocrat almost from under tire guillotine’s blade. She is rescued by the Marquis of Corbal. Varennes locates Cleonie and issu’es an order that every unmarried aristocrat must marry' a peasant within three days, an order calculated to dispose of Corbal. To describe more of this thrilling screen story would spoil the delights in store. Hazel Terry gives a fine performance as Cleonio and Hugh Sinclair is the Marquis of Corbal. The popular Noah Beery is also in the cast.
