MRS SIMPSON TELEPHONES LONDON

BEARS ATMOSPHERE OF UNDISGUISED SUSPENSE LONDON, December 9. The Daily Mail’s special correspondent at Cannes says Mrs. Simpson had several long telephone talks with London. A special private line has been installed, as it is feared some of the conversations have been tapped. She is nervous and depressed, and the long strain is telling on her looks and spirits. Mrs. Simpson spent most of the afternoon in an armchair, her lap full of newspapers, fidgeting with her bracelets, and listening for the telephone. She bore a general atmosphere of undisguised suspense. She took a motor drive lateil in the afternoon, accompanied by a detective. She wore a smart tailor-made costume. She returned locking refreshed and smiling. Rumours of a visit by the King to the Riviera persist. Lord Brownlow in a statement said no plans had been made for such a visit. Nevertheless police have been drafted to the airports in readiness for such a contingency.
