BOWLING.
a •‘Puzxlea”.c writes to “Jack” in the /.‘Otago Daily. Times’/:r— A section final is being played. One rink, which,' through previous losses, has no chance ot . going further, is beating the opposing rink which, if it loses, will also be eliminated. The last head is' -kicked in,' and the game is given to. the/Jatter rink. Is this Of the game of bowls? Please give me your unbiased, opinion. Here it fs’. It very decidedly is not>she spirit of the but unfortunately one not • infrequently meets with .cases of , childish nonsense such as is mentioned by 'iPubbled.” A’ glaring and crude case of this .kind occurred in the New Zealand tournaments in Christchurch in January. of this year, and was the subject of much adverse comment by those who were watching the game. If members of a team cannot win on their merits they should be ■ good enough sportsmen to accept defeat. What bowler who wins a final can honestly lay claim to . the title of champion if he has in the course of the earlier rounds accepted a charity win? Any howler who so far transgresses the rules of good sportsmanship as to accept a win which he has not earned, should get out of the game and stay out. The unfairness of such practices to other competitors requires no emphasising.
