RECORDING RAISES YIELOS

OUTPUT OF COWS INCREASED,. Milk yields in many parts of tho country, as the result of the work of the milk recording societies, show remarkable improvement. According to the reports for 1935 the yield per cow has been increased over whole Counties, states a British agricultural journal. The Suffolk M.R. Society, for instance, which claims most herds, members and percentage of cows recorded in the country, _states that in twenty years the average yield of Suffolk cows has been raised from 600 gallons lo 800 gallons. Essex has 278 recorded herds with 11,143 cows; in the peak year of 1928 there were 277 herds. The best herd average was that of Lord Rayleigh’s Farms (.Westocks), with 15,9611 b from 37 Friesians. Twenty-one cows have given 20,0001 b or over, and for the second year a 3000-gallon yield is recorded by Suttonhall Beryl, belonging to the Exors. of Mr W. H. Hutley, whiclf gave 30,2201 b and averaged 18,7421 b for three calves. In four years a Derbyshire farmer raised his herd average from 88591 b to 14,3341 b, and his non-pedigree Shorthorns headed the County Society’s list. A Friesian owned by Messrs Woodward Bros, gave the best individual yield—2l,649lb. Nine tons in 365 days were produced by the Friesian cow Clifford Chambers Friesian to head the Warwickshire list for Mrs Graham ReesMogg. Highest yield in Bucks was 24,007 lb by a cow in the herd of Messrs Headington Bros.; their herd average (Friesians) was 11,4771 b for 21 full year cows. j Just over a thousand gallons was the average yield of twelve full year cows in the Longrove herd of Mr A. M. Allen, Long Buckby, Northauts. For the County 76 herds averaged 698 gallons, which is twenty gallons above last year’s figure; there are 126 animals which yielded 1000 gallons or over. In Glamorgan the cup for the best herd average was won by the Friesian herd of Mr W. P. Howells, Cwm Barry Farm. Barry, with 12,7861 b average for eleven full year cows. A dairy Shorthorn belonging to Messrs R. G. Reader and Son, Rhoose had an annual average of over 12,3761 b for three years.
