BRAND OF UNFITNESS.

OPPOSITION TO LAW

Why Morganatic Marriage Is Impossible. Press Association —Copyright. London, December 8. Dealing with the morganatic marriage, The Times states: “In law, apart from the fact that Mrs. Simpson is not yet legally free to marry, there is nothing to bar Mrs. Simpson from becoming a consort or a Queen in the full sense. The disqualification in Britain is not, as on the Continent, one of law, but is one of fact. “What is demanded is statutory recognition that she is not fitted to be Queen. The Prime Ministers of the Empire are to be asked to accept and the Parliaments to accept and ratify a permanent statutory apology for the status of the lady whom the King desires to marry. The Constitution is to be amended in order that she may carry in solitary prominence the brand of unfitness for a Queen’s throne. Can anyone in possession of his faculties imagine any Prime Minister moving or Parliament supporting a proposition so invidious and distressing?” Sir John Simon and Sir Samuel Hoare were the first callers on Mr. Baldwin this morning; otherwise Downing Street was quiet Mr. Churchill has declined an invitation to broadcast to America. A lobbyist of The Times says Mr. Churchill in the House experienced the most striking rebuff in modern parliamentary history. The members had been irritated on Friday when he persisted in repeating a question, and there was a real wave of anger yesterday when he returned to the point.
