LONDON, December 8. In the House of Commons, replying to Major Attlee’s inquiry about whether any further statements could be made, Sir John Simon, on behalf of Mr. Baldwin, said there was nothing to add to yesterday’s statement. <, » Major Attlee: Is there any indication when further information will be available? Sir John Simon: No, I am afraid not. Mr. Baldwin, accompanied by Mr. W. T. Monckton, attor-ney-general, for the Duchy of Cornwall, drove from Downing Street at 3.48 p.m. for Fort Belvedere. Mr. Monckton and Mr. Melville had arrived together at No. 10 a quarter of an hour before. The Duke of Kent has arrived at Fort Belvedere. The Queen has cancelled to-morrow’s visit to the British and European Crown jewels exhibition, which was postponed. A later message says that Mr Monckton arrived at Fort Belvedere, followed about an hour later by Mr. Baldwin. The Duke of Kent is still at Ford Belvedere, and the Duke of York has arrived. Preparations were made in the daytime for additional guests for dinner. Unless an emergency arises, Mr. Baldwin is not going to the House of Commons, where there is a very thin attendance. ’ Owing to the crisis, Mr. R. A. Eden has cancelled his visit to the important League Council meeting on December 12, when intervention in Spain is to be discussed. Lord Cranbourne will deputise for him.

The Irish Independent says: “The situation is extremely to be regretted. In no Catholic country can any support or countenance be given to the remarriage of divorced persons. A message from Paris says that the newspapers unanimously hope that the British crisis will soon be ended. L’Oeuvre says it is disorganising the whole world by upsetting the British Empire and .preventing the Foreign Office carrying out the numerous tasks incumbent on it in the cause of peace. A Cape Town cablegram states that both the Times and the Argus call for th'e earliest possible settlement of the crisis in order to avert its progressively ruinous effects.
MAJOR ATTLEE HAS MADE NO PROMISES FOR LABOUR SIR STAFFORD CRIPPS ABSENT FROM PARTY MEETING. i . * (Press Association—Copyright.) Received Noon Today. ♦ LONDON, December 8. . At the Parliamentary Labour Party meeting, Sir Stafford Cripps, who supports the King, was a notable absentee. It is stated that Labour supports the Governments attitude but it is emphasised that Major Attlee expressed no opinion on behalf of his party, and his views were not invited. The meeting overwhelmingly opposed the marriage but no communique was issued because it is recognised that it was a matter between the King and the Ministry.
