'Press” Knitting Pattern
The ‘Quorndon’ Riding Outfit A well-shaped jumper for the rider, with a new style of beret, Together with the gloves they form a practical and chic “turnout” The “stock” effect of the collar is a unique feature. Materials required:—Jumper and beret; 9ozs 3-ply Ladyship Scotch Fingering, 1 pair knitting needles No. 11, 1 pair knitting needles No. 10. Gloves: 2ozs 3-ply Ladyship Sheen-ella Fingering, 1 set of 4 knitting needles No. 13. Important:—As different dye-lots should not be worked, into .the same garment, it is most important that you should make sure of having sufficient wool from the one dyelot to complete the garment. Each dye-lot has a separate letter, which is shown on the label of the bundle or box. Measurements: —J umper: Length, from shoulder to lower edge, 20 inches; width, all round below underarms, 33 inches; length of sleeve seam, including cuff, 20 inches. Beret: Depth, from centre crown to lower edge of brim, 7 inches; width, all round head, unstretched, '2O inches. Gloves: To fit a 6| to 63 hand. i Tension:—Pattern before pressing, stitches to 1 inch in width; 11 rows to 1 inch in depth. Note; —If the needles stated do *not fi..,. Wiocs, ES TH ES TA not produce this tension, try different sizes until you get it correct. Alteration in size:—For larger garments, use thicker needles, or a size which produces fewer stitches to the inch. For smaller garments, use finer needles, or a size which produces more stitches to the inch. Abbreviations: —K, knit; P. purl; sts, stitches; tog., together; pat, pattern; inc., increase; dec., decrease; beg., beginning; S, slip. Knit into the back of all cast-on' stitches.

When the sleeve seam measures 20 inches from the cast-on edge, work as follows: To Shape the Top of Sleeve. Cast off 2 sts from the beg of every row until 16 sts remain. Cast off. THE COLLAR. Using the No. 11 needles, begin by casting on 130 sts, and work in the rib of KI, Pl for 3 inches. Now shape the “stock’ point as follows : Cast off 35 sts from the beg of each of the next 2 rows. Work in the rib on the remaining 60 sts, working 2 sts tog at each end of the needle on every alternate row until 30 sts remain. Now work 2 tog at each end of the needle on every row until all the sts have been worked off. TO MAKE UP. Press on the wrong side with a hot iron over a damp cloth, taking care not to stretch the work. Sew up the shoulder, side and sleeve seams, then sew the sleeves into the armholes. Sew on the collar, placing the caston edge to the neck of the jumper. Press all the seams.
THE BERET. Using the No. 10 needles, begin at the lower edge of brim by casting on 120 sts, and work in the rib of KI, Pl for 5 rows. Purl 1 row. Now shape the beret as follows: Ist row: (KG, K twice into the next st) 4 times, (KI, K twice into the next st) 30 times, (KG, K twice into the next st) 4- times, K 4 (158 sts on the needle). 2nd row: Purl. Change to the pat as given for the jumper, and work for a depth of 4i inches from the cast-on edge. To Shape the Top. Ist row: * Kl 7, K2 tog. Repeat from * to the last 6 sts, KG. 2nd row: Purl. 3rd row: * Kl 3, K2 tog. Repeat from . * to the end of row. 4th row: Purl. sth row: * Kl2, K2 tog. Repeat from * to the end of row. 6th row: Purl. 7th row: * Kll, K2 tog. Repeat from * to the end of row. Bth row: Purl.
THE JUMPER. BACK. Using the No. 11 needles, begin at the lower edge by casting on 123 sts, and work in the rib of KI Pl for 3i inches. Change to the No. 10 needles and the pattern, and work as follows: — Ist row; Knit. 2nd row: SI, * KI, Pl. Repeat from ♦ to the last 2 sts, K2. 3rd row: SI, KI, * K 3, P 4. Repeat from * to the last. 2 sts, K2. 4th row: SI, KI, * P 3, K 4. Repeat from * to the last 2 sts, P2. These 4 rows complete the pattern. Continue in the pat until the work measures 14 inches from the cast-on edge.
Continue to decrease on every alternate row in this way, working 1 st less between each decrease, until 30 sts remain. Next row: Purl. Next row: K2 tog all along the row. Break off the wool, leaving an end a few inches long, pass the remaining 15 sts to the end of wool draw up and fasten off securely. Press on the wrong side with a hot iron over a damp cloth. Neatly join up the centre back ■seam. THE GLOVES. RIGHT HAND. Using the set of No. 13 needles and the 3-ply (Sheeivella Fingering wool, begin by casting on 52 sts as follows: Ist needle, 24 sts. 2nd needle, 12 sts. 3rd needle, 16 sts. Work in the rib of K2, P2 for 44 rounds. Now work in the following pat for 10 rounds. Ist round: Ist needle. * P2, K2. Repeat from * to end of needle. 2nd and 3rd needles. Knit. 2nd round: Ist needle. * K2, P2. Repeat from * to end of needle. 2nd and 3rd needles. Knit. These 2 rounds form the pattern. Repeat 8 times more. 11th round: Work in the pat, inc 1 st by working twice into the 2nd st of the 2nd needle. Repeat the 11th round until there are 32 sts on the 2nd needle.
To Shape the Armholes. Keeping the pat correct throughout, cast off 3 sts from the beg of each of the next 2 rows. Now K2 tog at both ends of the needle on every row until 95 sts remain, being careful to keep to the correct pat. Work on the remaining 95 sts for 4 inches, then -work as follows: To Shape the Neck. Work over 40 sts, cast off 15 sts, work over the remaining 40 sts. 2nd row: Work over 28 sts, work 2 tog, join on a second ball of wool, work 2 tog, work over the remaining 38 sts. Continue in the pat on each set of sts, decreasing 1 st at the neck edge on every row until 30 sts remain tor each shoulder.
To Shape the Shoulders. Cast oft 10 sts from the beg of every armhole end row (i.e., 'from the beg of each of the next 6 rows, counting the two sets of sts as one row). THE FRONT. Using the No 11 needles, begin at the lower edge by casting on 123 sts, and work in exactly the same way as stated for the back. THE SLEEVES (both alike). # Using the No. 11 needles, begin at the cuff edge by casting on 60 sts, and work in the rib of KI, Pl for 3 inches. Change to the No. 10 needles and the pat, and work for 2 inches. z Keeping the pat correct throughout, inc 1 st at both ends of the needle on the next and every follow-
THUMB. 31st round: 2nd needle. K2, slip the next 22 sts on to a stitch holder, KB. Work on the remaining 50 sts in the pat for a further 20 rounds. IST FINGER. Take 7 sts from the end of the Ist needle, and 7 sts from the beg of the 2nd needle. Cast on 4 sts, making 18 sts on the needle. Slip the remaining 36 sts on to a stitch holder. Divide the 18 sts equally on to 3 needles (6 on each needle), and knit for 33 rounds. 34th round: K2 tog at each end of
each needle. . Work 2 rounds without decrease. 37th round: Like the 34th round. Break off the wool, leaving an end a few inches long, thread through a Wool needle, and pass the remaining 6 sts to the length of wool. Draw up and fasten off securely. ' 2ND FINGER. Take 7 sts from the front of glove, cast on 3 sts, take 7 sts from the back of glove, pick up and knit 3 sts from base of fore-finger (6 —7 —7 sts). Knit 37 rounds, then shape the end as for the Ist finger. 3RD FINGER. Take 6 sts from the front of glove, cast on 3 sts, take 6 sts from back of glove, pick up and knit 3 sts from base of 2nd finger. Work as stated for the Ist finger.
4TH FINGER. Take 5 sts from front of glove, pick up and, knit 5 sts from base of 3rd finger, K 5 from back of glove. Knit 28 rounds. 29th round: K2 tog at each end of each needle. Knit 2 rounds without decrease. 32nd round: K2 tog at the beg of each needle. *” Pass the remaining sis to a length of wool, and complete as for other fingers. THUMB. Pick up 2 sts from top of thumb opening, K 22 sts from stitch holder (place 8 sts on to each of 3 needles), K 5 rounds. 6th round: Dec 1 st at the beg of each needle. (21 sts remain). Knit 23 rounds. Shape the top as for the Ist linger. LEFT GLOVE. (Ist needle, 24 sts. 2nd needle, 16 sts. 3rd needle, 12sts). Work as for the right hand, but for the thumb inc on the 2nd st from the end of the 3rd needle, and for Ist finger take 7 sts from beg of Ist needle and 7 sts from the end of the 3rd needle.
