FINE OF £250.
Bookmaker Who Could Not Be Caught. Press Association —Copyright. Dunedin, Dec. 2. Raymond Martin Quinn was fined £250 for bookmaking when he appeared in the police court to-day. Chief-Detective Young stated that ■the police executed a search warrant at defendant’s house on November 14, the last day of the Christchurch Cup meeting. An examination of betting slips showed that Quinn had taken 363 bets, totalling £206, while a further examination revealed his takings during the week were £760. Quinn had carried on bookmaking at Christchurch, Timaru and Dunedin, boasting that he could not be caught. Counsel for Quinn, Mr White, urged that it was almost certain that there would be an alteration in the gaming law in a few months, when bookmakers would be licensed. Mr White sought time for defendant to pay’, the chief detective retorting that he was a leading member of the Bookmakers’ Association, a financial organisation. Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M., allowed a week for the payment of £lOO and a month for the balance.
