GAS SHELLS USED.
Terrific Battle Progressing In North-west. Press Association—Copyright. London, Dec. 1. The biggest battle since the siege of Madrid began is progressing on the north-west front. It was accompanied by a terrific artillery duel that lasted throughout the night. The rebels are presumed to be attempting encirclement of the city. The Government claims a considerable advance towards the rebel headquarters at Burgos. An international column defending the capital declares that the rebels yesterday used asphyxiating gas shells. Five victims are in hospital. Full details will be supplied to the British Parliamentarians who last night witnessed an air raid at close quarters.
