STRATFORD W.D.F.U.
Celebration Of Ninth Birthi day. The ninth birthday party of the Stratford branch of the Women’s Division of the. Farmers’ Union was held at the residence of Mrs. W. J. Polson yesterday. There was an attendance of over 100,- including Representatives from all over the province. Welcoming the visitors, Mrs. E. S. Walker, president of the Stratford branch, said she was.pleased to s6e so many members present. To.bring about a stronger organisation and a better understanding, Mrs. Walker stressed the need for co-operation among farmers’ wives. She expressed the desire, however, for more of the younger community to become members of the division. It was the younger members on w’hom the minion depended to brighten conditions and prevent much of the monotony of country life. Appreciation was expressed to Mrs. Polson, who had done much to make the party a success. The branch was indebted to her for the use of her home. Mrs. Walker wished the Stratford branch success.
In reply Mrs Polson thanked the president. She agreed that the division needed a greater number of younger members. The senior division. however, must be given full support. “These members have experienced the mistakes of the past and are now in a position to correct the young,” said Mrs Polson. The time had come when all must unite, continued the speaker, emphasising the need for unity and co-oper-ation. She expressed good wishes for increased strength in W.D.F.U. organisations.
During the afternoon competitions were held on the lawns. A clock croquet tournament was particularly popular.
The gathering was considerably smaller than those of preVious years, but in spite of this there was a good representative attendance, visitors being present from Hawera, Midhirst, Toko. Inglewood, Cardiff, Wharehuia, Huiroa, Lowgarth, Ratapiko, Eltham, Pukengahu and Huinga. Afternoon tea was served on the lawn. The large birthday cake made by Mrs. R. Marsh was cut by Mrs Polson. A committee comprising Mesdames F. Bailey and M. Taylor was in charge of the tea arrangements. Mesdames C. Burton and R. Marsh comprised the social committee.
