CALF REARING.

MIDHIRST SCHOOLS .

Preliminary Judging Carried Out.

Calves entered by children from the Tuna, Stanley Road, Midhirst, Denbigh Road and York Road schools were judged yesterday, in preparation for the group judging at Midhirst on December 9, by' Messrs J. F. Sheperd, Opunake and E. R. Putt, Otakeho. The calves were of good quality, said Mr. Shepherd. The condition and appearance of the majority of entries were good, said Mr Putt. There were no “overdone” calves as a result of the elimination two years ago of the separate award for condition. If a calf was fed as a vealer it wa>s no good as a milker. Most of the entries now were good, sleek animals. The all round appearance of the calves was not so good, said Mr Putt, although whether that was the fault of the Children or parents he did not know. Calves should not be led on ropes but should be held with leather halters, which had not been provided in all cases. Most of the calves were well groomed. Mr R. Syme, Hawera officer of the Education Department, accompanied the judges and’’ awarded points for the charts. Details are: TUNA. Light Breeds. Calf. Chart. Total.
