(189 sts. on the needle). Knit 5 rows in Garter stitch, then cast off loosely. With right side of work towards you, pick up 101 stitches from the row ends down the side of the centre square, then join the wool at one end (right side of work towards you), and work the border pattern from **, repeating the stripes as before, 18 rows natural, 18 rows white, 18 rows natural, 18 rows white, 18 rows natural. Cast off loosely. Work the other two sides to correspond.
When you have completed the border on all four sides of the square, neatly join the corners together, leaving the stitches fairly loose to give a lacy effect. Pin out the Shawl to the measurements stated, and press on the wrong side carefully with a hot iron over a damp cloth, taking particular care not to stretch the border of the Shawl at the corners. It will be easier for pressing if the centre square is pinned out to give a 25in. square ,and pressed first. Pin out the border in sections, beginning at one corner, and pin out to a depth of 15 in. Then pin out the remainder of the border to the same depth on each side. This will ensure the border being even all round.
