ATHLETIC COMPETITION.
Stratford And Eltham Club Programmes. A programme for evening meetings for the next three weeks has been drawn up by 'the Stratford and Eltham athletic clubs. Points gained at any of these meetings by' Stratford competitors count for the Rogers Cup (ladies trophy); Butcher Cup (distance events); Mills Cup (sprint events); Petrie Cup (field events); Licensed Victuallers Cup (cycling); Malone Cup (runner gaining the most points); and the Polson Cup for the most improved sprinter, which is won. outright. The programme is: Stratford. Tuesday, December 8; Discus, high jump, men’s 100 yards and 880 yards, handicap, ladies’ 75 yards and 100 yards handicap; (cycles) i mile and 2 mile handicap (Im. scr), and 100 yards sprint, inter-house relay 4 x 110, schoolboys 100 yards and J mile, schoolgirls 100 yards. Tuesday, December 22: Shot putting, long jump, men’s 220-yards and 1 mile handicap, ladies 75 yards and 120 yards handicap; (cycles) 4 mile handicap, 5 miles handicap, 100 yards sprint, schoolboys’ 75 yards and 120 yards, girls’ 75 yards, in’terhouse relay 4 x 110.
Eltham. Tuesday. December 15: Schoolgirls under 10 years, 75 yards, (over 10), 100 yards: schoolboys under 10 years 75 vards, (over 10), 100 yards; school relays (girls) 4 x 100, (boys) 4 x 100; hop, step and jump, shot; men’s 120 yards and 440 yards; ladies’ 75 yards and 120 yards; walk 2 mile; (cycN ing) 1 mile, 3 mile and J mile scratch; inter-house relay 4 x 100. All meetings start at G. 15 p.m. and buses for the travelling team leave at 5.45 p.m.
Inter-club Competitions For Stratford Athletes.
An invitation from the Marton Athletic Club was considered by’ the committee of the Stratford Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club at a meeting last night. A programme was submitted of running, field events and cycling for which points gained by competitors would be counted for A their respective clubs. The committee considered that the idea of such an inter-club competition was an excellent one and it-was decided to accept the invitation,, provided suitable arrangements for transport could be made. An invitation to the New Plymouth Club to take part in a similar meeting a Stratford was decided on. If this is accepted, the meeting will be held as an electric light carnival at which it is hoped there will be a good attendance of the public.
STRATFORD WEIGHT JUDGING. L. Quin, Eltham, is the winner of the weight judging competition held at the Stratford A. and P. show last week. His estimate of 65S§lbs was only' Jib out, the correct weight of the bullock being 6591b5. Messrs F. R. Reardon (Eltham), N. G. Rowe (Ngaere) and A. Ferguson (Toko) ■tied for second and third places. Mr Reardon suggested 659Jlbs and. Messrs Rowe and Fergueson 658 Jibs.
Customs Methods. A comparison of English and NewZealand methods which did not reflect favourably on Auckland Customs officials was made by Mr. J. E. Sut* ciiffe, of Hastings, when discussing his recent visit to England. “At Southampton we were cleared and through the customs in a quarter of an hour,” he said, “while at Auckland we berthed at 9 o’clock and we ware not cleared till 11.30 a.m.”
