THE DAIRY INDUSTRY
STRIKING PROGRESS IN NEV/ ZEALAND NOW WORLD'S LARGEST EXPORTER. The growth of the dairying industry in New Zealand has been truly amazing. The export value of dairy produce rose from £2,744,770 in 1909 to £20,245,490 in 192(3-29 (the peak season), and last year, notwithstanding the (operation of depressed prices on the world’s market, the value of butter and cheese exported from the Dominion was £13,360,309, and of dried milk, £217,212. There were also minor by products. .Although the value of last year’s export of dairy produce was below that of the boom year, 1928-29, the output was higher by 88,440 cwt, showing that the industry has continuer! to advance in the face of adverse circumstances. The most significant factor associated with the history of dairying in New Zealand is that the Dominion in 1935 for'the first time figured as the world’s largest exporter of both bulteland cheese. Of the imports into the United Kingdom in 1935, the Dominion supplied 28 per cent, of the butter and 65 percent. of the cheese.
