Metealf and Frank Milton (or Middleton,) who were concerned in a sensational theft of jewels from the Carlton Hotel in 1917, _ together with Florrie Middleton a sister of Muton, were arrested at the Naval and Military Hooc-1 ~t South Kensington on a charge of Lcmg there for an unlawful purpose. " Theophilus James Metealf and Prank Milton were tried in September, 1917 I on a charge of being concerned in a' robbery of diamonds from a showcase at! the Carlton Hotel, and in the theft of! other jewellery. Metealf was a man of' means, and Milton was described as his secretary. Milton admitted having taken the jewellery from the Carlfcon) Hotel, and stated that his action was' clue to his addiction to drink and druo- s Metcalr denied all knowledge .of fi lo thefts.. He stated that two" articles of jewellery which he had given awa y had been received from Milton, who had be«n opven money to buy them. Milton who was found guilty of both stealino- and icpervmg; was sentenced to 18 month's 7 imprisonment, and Metealf, found '•milty a. receiving only, to 15 months.
