THE POPE AND LENIN.
The Vatican, for the first time in history, has used wireless telegraphy A report recently reached the Pope that the Bolsheviks had imprisoned Mgr de Doph, Archbishop of Mohiley, who lives m Petrograd, and were keeping him as a. hostage. Considering the advanced age and infirmities of Mgr. de Ropn, and that his imprisonment would virtually mean death, the Pontiff ordered i that everything be clone to obtain his release. Cardinal Gasparrl, Papal Secretory of State, after consultation with the Russian Minister to the Vatican decided to send a wireless despatch ' addressed to "Lenin, Moscow," in which he expressed the regret of Pope Benedict over the arrest of the prelate, and urged his liberation because of his ill-health and age. Four days afterward Lenin, the Bolshevik Premier answered by wireless from "Moscow, saying he had made immediate inquiries, and had been informed that the de Rosh arrested was not the archbishop, but the archbishop's nephew, 22 years old, who , was accused of intrigue against the Boirstievik Government. The despatch added that Lenin had ordered a quick in- , vestigation into young de Roph's case.
