IVfELSON SAVINGS BANK. — The -^ TRUSTEES of the above Bank are PREPARED TO LEND MONEY to the amount of £1000, in such sums as may be required, on security of freehold land, within twenty-five miles of the City ot Nelson. Rate of interest^ ten per cent. For further particulars* apply to Mr. H. D. Jackson, the Manager. DONALD SINCLAIR, 585 Vice-President Nelson Savings' Bank. To the Editor of the Nelson Examiner. SIR— There seems to be a fatality attending everything the Nelson Government attempts in this district. Without raking up the past, further than just to notice their action in the matter of the West Coast road, of itself sufficiently ridiculous and annoying, I would now direct your attention to another affair, or job as it appears to me, which causes a good deal of comment and indignation here at present. , It appears that the Superintendent has given £20 to Mr. Hornby, a publican at Washbourne's Flat, to improve the crossing-place of a creek on the road to Slate River, which everyone, except Mr. Hornby and his Honor, knows cannot be improved by any outlay short of that Mcessary to erect a dray bridge over it. It is not the egregrious absurdity of the thing which has given offence, so much as the manner of doing it; and, as to any benefit arising from it, the money might just as well have been thrown in the sea, since the first fresh will make short work of the few sticks Mr. Hornby has had laid in the creek. Accustomed as we are here to vagaries in road making, and patiently as we have borno with them hitherto, this last pound, if it has not broken our backs, • has at least loosened our tongues. Is it not monstrous that public money should be given to an irresponsible person to be thus thrown away, while a bridge in this town is reported officially by the chief constable " to be dangerous to life and property," and was been by the Provincial Engineer months ago much in the same state as it is now ? but there was then " no more public money to be spent in Collingwood till the General Government" had performed some miracle, I forget what. Contrast all this with the alacrity of the Council voting money for, and the Engineer reporting on the Wangapeka-road, or the desperate energy displayed in the mad attempt to connect the Waimeas with the West Coast, via the Mountains of the Moon ! I am, &c, I OBSERVER. December 14,1861. To the Editor of the Nelson Examiner. SIR— From the letter signed " Observer," you will perceive he charges me " with receiving £20 from the Superintendent to improve the crossingplace of a creek on the road to Slate River; that the ford cannot bo improved without erecting a dray bridge over it; as to any benefit arising from it, the money might just as well have been thrown into the sea, since the first fresh will make short work of the few sticks that have been laid in the creek,' &c., &c. I now distinctly state, previous to the repairing of the ford, that any empty dray, or pack bullock, or any person on horseback, had great difficulty in crossing the said ford. But, since the ford was repaired, a loaded dray or bullock not only can but doet cross with as much ease and safety as any ford across the Maitai in Nelson. And there have been not only one but three freshes (two heavy ones), and strange to say, the few sticks as " Observer " calls them, arc still in the same place, have never moved, but are gs firm as ever, and have positively diverted the stream to the other side of the creek. The total cost was not £20, but £15, and up the present time I have never received one shilling from the Superintendent. In pas-, sing I may observe there has been for some time a foot-bridge across the said creek. Whether the money has been wasted, or any improvement made, the public in general, but bullock-drivers in particular, are supposed to be the best judges. But '• Observer," I fear, is in error; it is quite possible he may mean Doctor's Creek, over which a dray bridge would be a very great boon, as it is decidedly the worst part of the road ; as for attempting to repair it, that would certainly be wasting money, time, &c. But, to conclude, Mr. Observer may rake up what he likes about fatality, or the West Coast road, or any other road ; he may lie as indignant as he may think proper, or perform as many miracles as he may lind profitable, and talk about the Mountains of the_ Moon, or any other moonshine, unil he is tired ; but is it to be hoped for the future, should anything happen (real or imaginary) that may loosen or set his tongue a wagging, that he will try to teach the said tongue to speak the truth, &c. I am,&c, JOHN HORNBY. Slateford, December 16, 1861. P.S.—I did not know of " Observer's " letter until the 14th December instant, otherwise it would have been promptly answered. 618 J. H.
