Commercial.

Colonist Office, Monday evening. The; past ten days having been somewhat finer than for some time previous, has in a measure tended to modify the unusually depressed state of business here; and as the season is now getting well forward, we may reasonably expect a return of our customary ' Nelson weather,1 when we believe business will become more brisk, and, consequently, far more satisfactory than has been the case for some time past. We may report our market as fully supplied with goods of every description, with the exception of sugars, stocks of which are at present very low. The rapid rise in the price of tobacco in Australia has caused a small advance here; the market was cleared for Sydney by the last steamer; the timely arrival of the Gladiator has 9 however, restored stocks to very nearly their former level. Some few articles of oilman's stores are enquired for. Bottled beer, for some time past scarce, is now in full supply. Receipts of gold have been as large as could be expected, so large a portion of the past month's weather having entirely prevented the diggers working. Indeed, from Collingwood we have most satisfactory reports, and are expecting such intelligence from the West Coast, and also from Wangapeka, as shall quite restore the character of our diggings, which for a short time were placed comparatively in the shade under the influence of the ' rush' in the South. We feel that our diggings must eventually draw a large population, and a considerable increase of the business of the settlement naturally ensue. The Dun Mountain Company, after a strange and unaccountable delay, seem now Bteadily pro. gressing with their railway works, and we hope very soon to be able to report the commencement of traffic between the port and town, which will prove a boon to our community and a source of profit to the Company.
