On Sunday afternoon the Airedale arrived with the northern mails at the last moment loanable her to tranship them to the Prince Alfred while yet in harbor. Contrary to expectation the writs for the election of Superintendent and members: of the Provincial Council of this province have not arrived by her. From Taranaki there is nothing to impart., if we except the following commercial item :—' In this town 1650 shares in the New Zealand Bank have been subscribed for to the present time—a very considerable number when our circumstances as a body are taken into account.' The earthquakes and the departure of Colonel Gore Browne, which have been the principal events in Auckland, since last advices, will be found detailed in another column. The Provincial Council has been dissolved. For the Superintendency there are two candidates, Dr. Stratford being brought forward to oppose Mr. Williamson, whose acts as Superintendent are thus enumerated :—' During his period of office, roads to the length of one hundred and fifty miles had been opened northward of Auckland, eighty miles had been opened southward ; thirty-five miles and a-half had been formed and metalled; four miles of pathways had been constructed: one hundred and eighty bridges had been built; the harbor had been improved; a system of education had been established ;• liberal land laws had been enacted and brought into operation, and thousands of industrious settlers had been attracted to the province and located successfully.' The General. Assembly stands prorogued until the 7th of December next.
