DR. CUMMING ON THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND.
At a late meeting in Liverpool, Dr. Cumming is reported to have stated that there were many things in the English Church which ho admired exceedingly. He was often tempted to steal from their Te Detim, their Litany, and some of their Collects. There were other things in which he differed from them, but still he believed the Church of England within the last few years, for the first time in its history, had awakened as a Church to common sense and practical and noble efficiency as a great missionary institution. Did they ask him for lbs evidence of that ? He did not count the links of it 3 apostolic succession—he did not appeal to Its Articles—ho did not quote its peculiar religious worship; but he stated this fact, that he had seen the Bishop of London—who was nono the worse as a bishop for being a Scotchman— preaching from an oranibu3; end he had seen a congregational minister one half of the day and a reotor of 'the Church of England another half, preaching in a playhouse, and a bishop pronouncing a-blessing without lawn sleeves or any other ecclesiastical declarations. He conceived that the Church of England was awakouing to its duty when it did that.
