WATER SUPPLY.
To the Editor of the Colonist,
Sm—Please give me a little space m your columns to answer my friend ' Householder.1 In the first place, Householder is altogether wrong in making me state thnt I live out of the town &c. jJlhc case was. as I said in my letter, purely a supposed ono. It so happens that I, myself am Uhe nexFdoor neighbor in town' (of whom Householder speaks) who is ' obliged to live there because I cannot afford to live elsewhere/ and although I pay a heavy rent for the premises I occupy! my landlord makes no provision for supplyiuifmewith water, but,'leaves me to get it as Lest I may;' therefore all Householder's remarks on this score go for nothing. Householder next talks very blandly about charity but does it not seem absurd to call a disposition'to sit still and allow yourself to be Inmbned with a grievous taxation, chavity? Then we have something in the shape of a calculation of the savin"- that would be effected in the matter of insurance. Householder, be honest. Are you or are you not aware that Mr. Edwards' evidence besore the Committee as to the difference the water supply would be likely to make in the rates of infurance was, that it would probably reduce the rate of insurance 15 per cent., not 40 per cent. ? If you are not aware of this, please to resd over the evidence yourself. As our respected Superintendent has set this question fairly before the public in his very business-like, matter of fact speech, I think I need say no more; still I should like to know why it is that the first two estimates made by professional men as to the expense of water supply from the same reservoir did not exceed £GOOO, and yet the plan fixed on should amount to £20,000? By all manner of means let us have water, it possible; we are very anxious for it; at the same time I believe the voice of the public is, Let us have a well-digested scheme, a very different one to the plan proposed
I am, &c. H. D.
