C. ORCHARD, Man ager. * June S. CO? npb the ELECTORS^ftIjTsUBURfiSbf •1- KELSON. Gextlemen —Observing- by the Colonist, of to-day that Mr. Wemyss has announced his resignation, as your representative in the General Assembly, and having been asked by a considerable number of the constituency to allow myi-eU'to be put in nomination fit the last election for the Suburban districts, I at that time deferred acceding to their wishes, believing that Mr. Wemyss would more ably perform that duty ; but ob circumstances have occurred which have necessitated his resignation, I at once oiler myself as a candidate fqiTyour approval. From-the length of time I have had a scat in the Provincial Council, also a member ot the Assembly in 1856", my political views must be pretty well known to most of you; consequently I shall content myself with i very briefly alluding to a few questions affecting our j present political position. The native war question and the peace terms offered Ly the Government arc, "so far as information has yet readied us," so undefined, that I am unable at present to offer an opinion ; but should I 'Have the honour of being a member of -tho .Assembly,- I shall Bupport no Government whose, measures fall. short ofentire submission by the natives to British law and au~ thority. ~ ... . ■ . . In Provincial matters I should support every measure which will give effect to the principles of-local self-government, believing that purely local affairs arc better managed by local supervision'; and I cannot butthinl? that this principle has been departed, from in the retention of our gold-fields under general Jcofitrol nnd management. This sublect 1 liave brought before tho Provincial Council at present in session, ■with a view to getting the msnagcincnt-of this branch of industry into our own hands, and will, if.returned,. make it my endeavour to induce the General C!ovevninent to give, effect to the same, >»;:'■■ "-<.. ■-■ : The mining interests of. the province aj'o, in .my-, opinion our best inheritance, and no .interest more affects the prosperity of the Suburban districts.;than this one ; consequently, we ought to. be -very jealous, in parting with its management;. . • ,'.''■' "'-.'.,. I have only further £o add that, should the electors'. entrust me with their fi'uifrages.l' ehall 'do ihy'bcsfc' faithfully to discharge the duties as, 'their'repi^erjtative.
