Commercial.
Colonist Office, Monday Evening. During the past month a fair amount of business has been done, and stocks of many articles in first hands are beginning to run out. Chicory, bottled beer, . olive oil, salt, and a few other articles, are low in stock in first hands, but will be supplied per Glenshee now daily looked for. The market otherwise- ia well supplied and dealers are still buying cautiously to supply only actual requirements, and not en speculation. The progress of the Wangapeka diggings, considering the very rainy weather we have lately experienced, is satisfactory, and the gold is beginning to find its way into town. : The Collingwood gold-fields have experienced a check, consequent upon a rush to. Wangapeka, and business, at the port was dull at last accounts* .^ . : The West Coast diggings have also attracted many diggers from Collingwood and the neighborhood, and a small vessel is about to' sail for the diggings in this neighborhood with supplies. The character of the gold from this region is heavier than usual, and,, the natives have obtained some fifty ounces thence without tools! We may therefore expocfc• large results as soon as' an available road is opened. ' • ,-•■..-•
The tenders for the '■• remaining 'portion of the Dun Mountain railway have been taken up, and the works are inprogross. .Wemay therefore hope .to see a sufficient quantity of cbrpme brought down'to freight the wool ships uext season. •
It,is asserted here that the.bank of New South Walas intends establishing a branch at thiVcity ; but we have hot yet heard, it coufirmed... Whether the 'establishment of a second Jbank berewould.be likely to prove beneficial to.the settlement has always,.-been a. matter of debate. ,
The question, of a dry, dock, or slip, ,bas bees brought before''a. Select Committee of the Provincial Council, and recommended. We Lave no doubt that it will be carried out, but the government are recommended to guarantee 10 "'per cent, interest, on a capital not exceediifg £10;000 for that purpose. The establishment of such a work would doubtless cause a great increase in the'trade of'the'port. " , *'' i The'ironiighthouse for erection on the Boulder-bank, is on board* the Glensliee, and wevtrustto see the light exhibited before the end of the year, The following arejc-ur quotations':— ' ' " ; ~-,'.
