OBITUARY.

The death of Sir Hugh Lyon Playfair occurred on the 21st January. He was the son of the distinguished Principal Playfair, of tho United College, St. Andrew's, and was 75 years of age. The Countess of Eglinton died on the 31st of December, at Eglinton Castle, Ayreshire. She was the only daughter of the Earl and Countess of Essex; was born in 1828, and married in Dublin in 1858, at which time the Earl was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.

Sir* Peter Fairbairn died at Leeds on the 4th of January, fie was an illustrious example of what can be done by self-help, independence, and perseverance. He was set to work at eleven rears of age; at fourteen was appienticed to a millwright and engineer at Newcastle-on-Tyne; he visited France in 1828; and in 1829 he went to Leeds, and laid the foundation of that colossal establishment which now gives employment to from 1000 to 1400 workman. He made great improvements in woollen and flax machinery. Dr. Noble, M.P. for Leicester, died suddenly whilst travelling in Spain; he was in his 65th year. Major-General Albert Goldsmid died on January 6th. He entered the army as cornet of the 12th Light Dragoons, and fought in the Peninsular war till 1814; he was likewise at Waterloo.

Sir R. P. Jodrell died on the 14th January : he was born in 1781.
