Correspondence.

To the Editor of the Colonist.

Sib—l see that the No. 1 Company of Volunteers, with that zeal which has characterised that body from the commencement, have reformed for another twelvemonth, and given an opportunity for others to join them, as they publicly express a desire to add ' largely to the effective strength of the corps.' Would it be impertinent in me to inquire how many of the Government officials—General and Provincial—have joined the Volunteers ? There is a goodly number of hale well-paid men in the Customs, Harbor, and other departments, whose services, one would suppose, would be acceptable in any of the companies of Volunteers. Or should they think that they are too genteel or respectable (as is the case with many like semi-paupers at home), then let them form a company of their own, and drill and fight in kid gloves with silvermounted rifles and silver bullets, besides being redolent with eau de Cologne and attar of roses. The public would pay for these little refinements, on account of the extra efficiency of this corps of exquisites.

Now, as these gents are well paid, they will perhaps excuse one of the public, who works hard to keep them 'at home in ease,' and assist them in gatting sheep-runs and other snug properties, and who is anxious to know how much of their spare time—of which, comparatively speaking, they have so much—they devote to the public good. .-.;... ; Yours, &c A TAXPAYER.
