MOTUEKA.

Cricket:—A match between the Wakefield and Motueka Clubs was played on Friday last at Motueka. The weather was everything that could be wished for, aud the attendance of spectators good. The match was played in the same field that has been used for similar purposes for the last three or four years; it is one of the best in the province, and was devoted to the purpose by the kindness of the owner, Mr. John Staples, sea. The Wakefield men were sufficiently known to fame to make them the favorites in the betting at the commencement. The choice fell to the Wakefield players, who sent in Motueka for the first. innings; these kept their wickets for two hours, the last wicket going down for 92 runs. Wakefield then took the bat, but were cleared off in less than an hour, with no more than 20 runs scored. players then adjourned lo the booths and partook of luncheon, after which Motueka resumed the willow and scored 80, which with the 72 majority in the first innings, made the respectable number of 152 for Wakefield to go against. The latter, however, io spite of the discouraging aspect of affairs, went to work strenously, and after an hour and a-half's sharp practice, darkness prevented the completion of the game, and the umpires drew the stumps with six wickets to go dowD. The Motueka men then invited their oppouerts to a dinner at the Swan lon, and about 40 persons sat down, spending a mo9t pleasant and convivial evening, Mr. J. F. Wilson in the chair. Upon resuming the game next morning the score reached 106 points, showing that Wakefield had struggled manfully, though unsuccessfully, against the large majority obtained in tbe first inning 9by their adversaries.
